The Breeding Program

Hain Herefords are an integral part of the Hain Partnership farming business.  However, the core of our business is commercial sheep and beef production.  Like all New Zealand sheep and beef producers we are exposed to the same climatic pressures and price fluctuations that are out of our control, yet significantly impact on our bottom line.  Our commercial background has taught us to take advantage of the things that we can control - management and genetics.

As the old saying goes, ‘the only free lunch in the beef industry is hybrid vigour’.  Our commercial herd is based on this very fact.  We have learnt that crossbreeding is the best financial choice for our business.   Similarly, mating all yearling heifers provides earlier financial returns and faster genetic gain.

Genetics also have the potential to significantly impact on profitability.  Fertility, growth, muscling and temperament for example are largely controlled by genetics.  It is these traits that we have been consistently tough on over time.  This disciplined no second chances approach, has without doubt created a highly efficient, productive and economical herd, of which we are very proud.

What we have learnt about profitability in our commercial her d has governed the decisions we make in our stud herd.   We manage the stud cows in a way that exposes them to the same pressures as any commercial operation.  This has produced a line of cows that are fertile, docile, efficient and that will perform under all conditions.

The bulls that we offer for sale each year are a sound reflection of this and are bred on the hills for a working life not a sale day.
